When God tells you something

A funny thing happened to me since our church had Vacation Bible School.  VBS was great.  We saw 36 kids during the week and had another 15 student workers who helped out.  We had buckets of fun.  We learned about Daniel.  We discovered what it means to trust Jesus with all of our life.  Our memory verse was Isaiah 30:21, “and whenever you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: ‘This is the way. Walk in it.'”

Now, I said that a funny thing happened to me… That thing that happened was that I have been seeing Isaiah 30:21 all over the place.  I have seen it at Grandma’s house.  I have seen it in my personal devotional.  I have seen it in this week’s church devotional.  I saw it when I looked up cross references during my study for last Sunday’s sermon.  Wow!  Suddenly Isaiah 30:21 was everywhere.

Now, I don’t believe that we should see a text and rip it out of context and try to force it to say something to our situation; but when God repeats Himself before us it would be good to pay attention.  God told Israel hundreds of years ago, “You will hear this command behind you: ‘This is the way.  Walk in it.'”  They were told to pay attention.  They were told to stay the course.  They were told when they heard the command that they would give up their sin and come back to God.  He would teach them, and lead them, and bless them.

I need that word.  I feel the temptation to turn left or right.  Don’t you?  I feel the temptation to compromise or live in the flesh.  Don’t you?  We are told that it is easier.  We are told that there is a better path.  We are told that we cannot do anything different.  Yet, God says that we must start listening to Him again.  He declares that He can be trusted.  Will we?  I know for me that the repeated declarations is an underline and exclamation point.  God has encouraged and challenged me.  Now I pass this on to you – God’s way is the way.  Will you walk in it?

Something to think about,

Pastor John
